2019/20 QLD Water and Wastewater Price Benchmarking
Updated: Jul 21
AEC has undertaken price benchmarking for large QLD local government water utilities since 2002/03. Our publication focusses on residential charges levied in 10 South-East Queensland (SEQ) Water Grid service areas and 10 non-SEQ service areas and is made available free of charge to assist Councils in undertaking comparisons between their local charges and those levied in other regions. The publication is available from the Publications section of the Research & Information tab on our website.
The median residential water charge is $986 per annum (at 200kL consumption), an increase of 4.1% on the prior year. The SEQ median increased by 3.6%, while the non-SEQ median increased by 1.1%. The SEQ median has been increasing at a greater rate and is now $370 higher than the non-SEQ median. This gap, primarily a result of the SEQ Water Grid, is not expected to widen much further with most of SEQ at the destination price for bulk water.

The median residential wastewater charge is $675, an increase of 2.0% on the prior year. The SEQ median increased by just 0.1%, while the non-SEQ median increased by 2.3%. The non-SEQ median has been increasing at a greater rate and is now $87 higher than the SEQ median. Looking forward, price increases are anticipated to continue to be higher in non-SEQ regions due to a range of factors including substantial renewal works and continued progress towards appropriate cost recovery.
