The Carbon Tax and Australia's Accommodation Industry
AECgroup recently undertook a study for Tourism Accommodation Australia (TAA) which supported growing concerns for Australia's Tourism Accommodation sector following the introduction of the Carbon tax. AECgroup's report found that carbon pricing is impacting heavily on accommodation businesses, with profit reductions of up to 12% attributable to increased costs related to tax. AECgroup estimated that across the Australian accommodation industry the carbon tax cost will be up to $114.9 million in its first year.

Earlier this year, AECgroup conducted research for the Western Australian Tourism Commission advising on government investment incentives designed to stimulate the Perth hotel market. This research has been instrumental in the development of the WA Government’s recently announced incentives program to assist the struggling hotel market in Perth. The incentives program includes the release of Crown Land at a reduced rate for hotel developments which will help facilitate hotel accommodation development by overcoming regulatory and market barriers and encouraging much needed hotel investment.
